As you know I have recently bought an old mk1 golf convertable, I've always loved cars and have been totally obsessed with old volkswagens for as long as I can remember, so I ended up treating myself to this after my first year of driving (as this would have been way too expensive to insure for my first year)
Now I'm going to be honest. It will always seem like a good idea at the time to buy something like this, old, retro cool and lovely for summer. However, you need to commit a huge amount of your time, and especially you're money to be able to keep one of these things on the road... I mean my car is 10 years older than me! (I'm 18) so I can hardly expect the car to run perfectly!
Anyway I'm in the slow process of restoring it, as I could only afford one that was totally knackerd and unfortunately my parents aren't rich ha so I have to fund everything myself and as I'm still at college and only have a part time job at co-op, I find it really difficult to be able to spend money on it! Eventually I would love to be able to take it to shows, however for now I will have to wait :)
Now the original trim for my car is red as it's a gti and that's how they came but the previous owner had sprayed it black! I went to b&q (which is the most boring shop in the world I will add) and ended up buying some red paint and a can of primer so I could have a go at re painting it myself, as to buy the trim again in red would cost me about £100!
I actually found painting the trim really easy and if you're considering it yourself I would go for it! Make sure you sand down the trim first with fine sandpaper (I used p750) and then wait for the primer to be fully dry before you spray the trim red! I would also suggest doing the red layers thin and do several layers of them as it prevents the paint running.
Overall I'm really happy with how it's turned out! I also found an old AA badge and stuck it on the frount however I don't think I'll be keeping it on as I'm not keen :/

That’s a lovely Volkswagen! You truly saved up a lot by doing the painting all by yourself. And the result turned out really nice! I love how its new vintage color gives the car a tough vibe. Thanks for sharing that car update, Emma!

Looks great with the new red trim. I love those old Golf convertables - very vintage and cool. My Dad had one when we were growing up. We felt like movie stars when he had the roof down. Shades on, wind in your hair – nothing like it – hope you get yours on the road soon.
